Within 3 years of its first OSHA consultation, Point Five not only exceeded OSHA
standards, it also met the criteria for special recognition from the agency. In
2000, Point Five Windows became the 18th company in Colorado to quality for OSHA's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program
(SHARP). We have received this award every year since! In 2007, Point Five
was one of only 3 companies in the state to quality for this prestigious OSHA
safety award for 7 years running.
At Point Five Windows, a company-wide commitment to safety and health reduced
injuries dramatically and earned the company entree into OSHA's prestigious
SHARP program. Point Five has received this award for the past 7 years straight
and our safety culture runs from the owners and management all the way to the
production floor. Employees take turns serving on a risk assessment and incident
review safety committee that meets monthly to review incidents, "near
misses," and hazards. Plant-wide safety award meetings are held each month
and our eight department heads meet at least bimonthly to discuss safety issues unique
to the department.
To
help keep safety uppermost in every employee's mind, Point Five presents a one-troy-ounce coin to each
employee
to symbolize something that was once almost unheard of....an injury-free month
for all of its employees. Frequently, Point Five goes 90 consecutive days
without a workplace injury. To commemorate those milestones, each employee
receives two silver coins!
This program has not only generated excitement in the company, but it has
generated a lot awareness about safety and a great deal of cooperation among
employees. Working together as a team, our employees keep focused on preventing
injuries, and the company has been saved as much as $60,000 a year in worker's
compensation premiums.
"Safety is an essential variable and as our experience shows, it's a
win-win for everybody." ... Gordon Hanniford, Vice President.
